Fred Sauter is a NYC-based musical theater Lyricist/ Librettist.
With each project, he seeks to discover new ways to combine elements of modern song styles with theatre and storytelling. Major influences on his work include Howard Ashman, Tim Rice, Stephen Sondheim, as well as David Bowie, John Waters, Tim Burton and Sandra Bernhard. He comes equipped with a prodigious imagination and an unstoppable volcano of ideas. His stories are epic in nature and spectacular in scale and vision, taking the form of science fiction, horror, fairy tales and myths and often including LGBTQ themes.
His musical Sleep Tight (formerly titled Bedbugs!!!) written with Paul Leschen, was a New York Times Critic’s Pick Off Broadway and is currently optioned for future productions. The team went on the self-produce their second musical The Astronaut Love Show Off-Off Broadway.
Fred is currently working on three new musicals: A Trip to the Moon (with David Mallamud), Craft Show (with Brett Macias) and Small Pond (with Leschen). He has recently completed the first year of NYU’s Opera Lab and is beginning his journey into the opera world. He has also self-produced numerous readings and special theatrical events, and spent time on stage performing in cabaret shows and with his former band The Production.
He holds an MFA from NYU Tisch's Graduate Musical Theater Writing Program and a BFA from Maryland Institute, College of Art. Member of the Dramatists Guild and ASCAP.
